Top South African Wines from “Savor South Africa”

As promised here is my top ten list of wines from the “Savor South Africa” event.

  1. Simonsig Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
  2. Meerlust Rubicon 2001
  3. Lynx Shiraz 2005, Franschoek
  4. Rust En Vrede “Estate” 2003
  5. Waterford Shiraz, Stellenbosch 2003
  6. Waterford Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch 2003
  7. De Trafford Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
  8. Simonsig Sauvignon Blanc
  9. Simonsig Chenin Blanc
  10. Glen Carlou 2005 Syrah

Most of these wines are in the low twenties for the reds and around ten for the whites so they are all great values. In addition, I chose Porcupine Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 as the “value” pick at only $10.79/ bottle.  My “bad value” pick is the Ernie Els 2004 which at $95 is just not worth it.

If you are familiar with South African Wines you will notice that there are not any Pinotage varietals on the list as Pinotages with their heavy earth flavors are not my type of wine. That being said if you like an earthy wine you should give Pinotage a try. Cheers!
